Nimda security memo to Red Clay clients

As most of you know, Corporate America is once again faced with a destructive new Computer Virus/Worm called "WM32.Nimda.A@mm". This virus/worm may possibly turn out to be worse than the recent "Code Red" that hit computers a few months ago. Not only can you get this virus/worm from email, but you can also get it by simply browsing the web.

Our Technical Director Greg Cruce has researched the new "Nimda" virus/worm, and we wanted to pass on the following information on protecting your system. Thanks.

W32.Nimda.A@mm Virus/Worm

What is it?
The virus/worm infects your computer thru a number of methods, including e-mail, visiting an infected web site, or by using an infected file (sharing a floppy, etc.)

What does it do?
The virus replicates itself on your system in many directories and programs. It has the ability to infect Windows itself, Word documents, Outlook, Outlook Express, and several other popular programs. Once infected, it begins to spread to other computers thru its own built in e-mail program, and by "sharing" folders on your computer that allow hackers easy access.

How can I prevent it?
First and foremost, make sure you have an anti-virus program installed,
up-to-date, and running, in particular, scanning your e-mail! Second, if you are using Internet Explorer 5 or higher, be careful where you surf. The virus can infect Web sites. If, while surfing, you are prompted to download a file that you did not yourself initiate, DO NOT accept the download. The probability is high that the site you are at is infected. Third, make sure all computers have run the Microsoft Windows Update utility and that they are up-to-date (Start -> Windows Update).

What do I do if I am infected?
First, if you are on a network, unplug your computer from the network ASAP. This will contain the virus to your computer and prevent further infection.
Second, run your up-to-date anti-virus software. If you do not have
anti-virus software, you will need to acquire and run an anti-virus boot disk. Turn the computer off, put the boot disk in the floppy drive, and boot the computer. It will attempt to clean the infected computer.
