It's All About the Kids

Anthony Defoor and Zack Abernathy, two of Red Clay's more technologically savvy and fair minded staff members, recently donated their Saturday morning to judge a regional technology fair hosted at Lakeview Academy.

The event featured students 4-12th grade from all over Hall County. The projects ran the tech spectrum from robotics, to flash animation, to graphic design.

Anthony was particularly impressed with the flash project by a 4th grade girl from Fair Street Elementary, a school where 93% of students are economically disadvantaged. "If I just saw the final animation, I would have thought it was designed by at least a high school student," said Anthony. "I was blown away."

"What was amazing was her dedication," he said. "She doesn't have a computer at home, so she came in to school early, stayed late, and used all of her free time to complete the project."

Zack was similarly impressed. After seeing Power Point presentations on every subject from airplanes, to gladiators, to Roman gods, he said a project close to home stood out.

"One student did a presentation on Lake Lanier and the effects of the drought," said Zack. "It was incredibly professional with amazing graphics. It certainly taught me a lot about the lake."

Both were excited about the chance to get involved in the community where they work. "I was amazed at the skill level for kids so young," Zack said. "It was incredible to see the kinds of opportunities available in our local school systems."

Anthony enjoyed the chance to mentor the students. "It was fun to share a little bit of what I've learned working in the technology field," he said. "I was encouraged to hear how much passion each student had behind their project. It was great."
